Transitioning to Practice?

Upon completion of residency or fellowship you will no longer be eligible for coverage under the Resident Disability Insurance Plan. Coverage must be converted to the practicing physician plan. If you convert your coverage within 90 days of the end of your residency program you will have an opportunity to: 

  • elect additional coverage, 
  • elect an alternate elimination period and 
  • elect additional Riders

Disability Insurance

The Resident Disability Insurance Plan is designed to protect your income, a business you might establish, your retirement savings and ultimately, your lifestyle, in the event of a disability. You are investing significantly in your future, and our Doctors of BC insurance team is here to help safeguard your potential earnings against the toll that a disability could take.

Coverage is available in units of $100 from a minimum of $500/month to a maximum of $4,000/month for Residents in years 1 to 5, a maximum of $5,000/month for Residents in years 6 and 7, a maximum of $6,000/month for General Practitioner Fellows and a maximum of $7,500/month for Specialist Fellows.

If you were insured under the Doctors of BC Student Disability Plan, your coverage will automatically transition into the Resident Disability Plan when you complete medical school. However, you will be prompted with an opportunity to elect additional coverage and Riders at the transition point. 

Residents in all years have access to this comprehensive plan throughout Residency, without proof of good health, however a 12-month pre-existing conditions limitation will apply to this coverage.

Own Occupation Rider

The Own Occupation Rider may allow you to be considered totally or partially disabled from your regular occupation even if you find work in another occupation or another field of medicine.

Retirement Protection Rider

The Retirement Protection Rider is designed to help you by providing a tax-free benefit contribution to a locked-in, non-registered investment vehicle. 

If you do not take advantage of the opportunity to add these features to your coverage when you are first enrolled under the Resident Disability Insurance Plan, you can add them at a later date without proof of good health. To do so, you must apply within 90 days of completing your residency training program.

Physicians’ Disability Insurance (PDI) Plan

Resident/Fellows members who continue to have Doctors of BC Resident Disability coverage for a minimum of 12-months immediately prior to completing their program, are eligible to apply for the BC government funded Physicians’ Disability Insurance (PDI) plan upon start of practice – without proof of good health.

Life Insurance

The Term Life Insurance plan helps to provide financial security for your family or secure your debt should you die unexpectedly. Life insurance is available in units of $50,000, up to a maximum of $5,000,000 per person.

Special Offer: 

Doctors of BC resident members may obtain $100,000 in life insurance coverage, without providing proof of good health. This offer is available at any time during your residency, and can be added on top of previous Doctors of BC Student Life insurance. This offer does not apply to spouses. 

Premium rates: 

You and your spouse may be eligible to receive valuable savings with Preferred and Elite premium rates. These offer lower premiums to healthier, low risk individuals who apply for at least $250,000 of coverage. You and your spouse will automatically be considered for these rates when applying for coverage under this plan. The following factors will be considered to determine if you qualify for Standard, Preferred or Elite rates: 


  • tobacco use
  • physical build
  • cholesterol level
  • blood pressure
  • personal and family medical history
  • recreational activities
  • driving record

Already enrolled? Important consideration for Future Insurability Option (FIO):

If you opted to include the FIO rider in your coverage, be aware of the opportunities you have to increase your coverage without having to provide proof of good health. If you exercise your FIO rider at the right times, your coverage can be increased in increments of $50,000 up to $500,000 (subject to the overall plan maximum of $5,000,000). FIO cancels at the first renewal beyond age 55.

In order to exercise the FIO increases you must be actively at work or on a parental leave.

You may apply to exercise the FIO increase within 60 days of one of the following events:

  • graduation from medical school and currently in or starting a residency program in Canada or the United States
  • the date of marriage or date that a common-law relationship as defined in the policy
  • the date of birth of a child of the insured member or insured spouse or the date of legal adoption of a child
  • the successful completion of a medical residency program
  • the date the inured member or insured spouse attains age 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50 & 55

Proof of Good Health: 

After submission of your application, if any proof of good health is required, we will contact you to make arrangements at no cost to you. Depending on your age, health and the amount of coverage being applied for, you may be required to provide one or more of the following: 

  • Telehealth interview
  • Blood and urine
  • Vitals
  • Paramedical Exam
