How to submit a disability claim

Are you suffering from a medical condition or injury that makes it impossible for you to work full time? Are you insured under one or a combination of the Physicians Disability Insurance plan, Doctors of BC Voluntary Disability Income Insurance Plan, or Professional Expense Insurance Plan? Not sure what your next steps should be to make a claim?

In the attached guide, we give you the big picture so you will know, step-by-step, what you should do when applying for any type of disability benefit administered by Doctors of BC.

BC Funded Physicians’ Disability Insurance

This plan is funded by the provincial government and provides a non-taxable monthly benefit up to $6,100, based on your eligible income. This coverage is of no cost to you, but you must apply for it before it’s activated.

Eligibility

You are eligible to apply for coverage under this plan if you are:

  • Under age 65
  • Receive fee-for-service and/or sessional payments from the Medical Services Commission of British Columbia and/or you are paid under a non-salaried service contract.

Although the provincial government funds this benefit, coverage is not automatic. You must apply for it, and proof of good health is required.

How much insurance coverage is available to me?

Your monthly PDI benefit is calculated on April 1 each year, and is based on your prior calendar year’s eligible MSP earnings (fee-for-service billings, sessional payments or non-salaried income under a service contract) and your type of practice. The maximum monthly benefit is $6,100 (non-taxable).

For additional coverage, you may apply under the IncomeProtectTM for Practicing Physicians plan.

If I have other disability benefits, could my PDI benefit payment be reduced?

Your monthly PDI benefit will be reduced at the time of claim if your total disability benefits from all government and private sources exceed 60% of your net pre-disability earnings (after expenses but before income or corporation tax).

Your monthly PDI benefit will be reduced by 50% of any disability benefit you are entitled to receive under the Canada Pension Plan, but will not be affected by any dependent benefits or any subsequent cost-of-living adjustments.

How are premiums paid?

Full premiums for PDI coverage are paid for by the provincial government. The PDI benefit you receive while disabled (either partially or fully) is non-taxable. Therefore, the Canada Revenue Agency considers the PDI premium paid on your behalf to be taxable personal income, and a T4A will be issued to you annually.

IncomeProtect™ for Students

No-Cost Coverage

Get a head start on establishing your financial protection plan.

It’s smart to be ahead of the game and insure yourself when you’re young and healthy. Changes in your health could make it hard — sometimes impossible — to obtain coverage or afford the premiums for the coverage you may need in the future. And, if you have student or car loans, living expenses, or a mortgage on a first home or condo, insurance can help you cover some of these expenses if you become sick or have an accident.

Doctors of BC will provide no-cost coverage to full-time undergrad med students who are members, and who apply for the Student Disability Insurance during all four years of medical school.

How much disability insurance is available to me?

The plan provides:

  • $1,500 monthly benefit if you are a first or second-year student.  Apply for your no-cost coverage
  • $2,500 monthly benefit if you are a third or fourth-year student
  • $4,000 monthly benefit if you are a 4th year student. This is optional and an Application Form must be completed.
How much does it cost?

Premiums for students in years 1 - 3 and premiums for students in year 4 under the $2,500 monthly benefit option are paid for by Doctors of BC.

Premiums for students in 4th year under the $4,000 monthly benefit option are seen in the chart below.

AGE 4TH YEAR ($4,000 MONTHLY BENEFIT)
Under age 40 $75
40 - 44 $150
45 - 54 $225
55 - 64 $300
Do I need to provide medical proof of good health to apply?

No, you don’t need to provide proof of good health, but a pre-existing condition limitation applies during the first 12 months of coverage. This means that you may not be covered for a disability that results from a health condition you had, whether diagnosed or not, during the 12 months following the effective date of your coverage under this plan. This limitation no longer applies after your coverage has been in place for 12 months.
