A new direction forward: Doctors of BC’s new strategic plan

January 30, 2024

Dear Friends,

It gives me great joy to present Doctors of BC’s new strategic plan for 2024-2029: Creating a Better Future for Health Care. During the next five years, this plan will act as the association’s North Star as we work to fulfill our new mission: Working together, we support BC's doctors to be leaders in delivering and improving patient care.

The health care system is in the midst of a major transition, with new challenges and opportunities. You – our members – have the knowledge, skills, and experience to lead in these challenging times from the forefront towards a better future. Our strategic plan sets a new direction for Doctors of BC and seeks to position physicians as leaders in the health care system, proactively seeking improvements, finding solutions, and fostering innovation to benefit patients and physicians alike. Doctors of BC, through our new strategic plan, seeks to emphasize our continued commitment to Truth and Reconciliation, and advancing equity, justice, and cultural safety in health care.

The strategic plan is defined by four priorities:

  • Increasing the influence of the physician voice

  • Promoting physician health, wellness, and safety

  • Ensuring fair compensation and providing business supports

  • Engaging members on the future of the profession and culture of medicine

Our work also highlights the need for a new organizational vision:

  • Doctors making a difference for patients by:

    • Providing quality patient-centred, culturally safe care

    • Being a trusted voice in health care system transformation

    • Achieving professional satisfaction by feeling valued

To help Doctors of BC staff in their work supporting doctors across the province, the plan includes three key principles – or enablers – that will be weaved throughout the work we do on your behalf and in support of our strategic priorities:

  • Equity

  • Modernization

  • Sustainability

The development of the new strategic plan is the result of an extensive and collaborative year-long planning process that included multiple strategy discussions, reaching out to a large number of members, thought-provoking workshops, engagement with the JCC Physician Co-Chairs, followed by an extraordinary Board meeting, and educational sessions on governance and strategic planning. None of this would have been possible without the meaningful involvement of the Doctors of BC staff, who provided their important perspective and insights.

I would especially like to thank the Board for the significant time and dedication that went into creating this plan and the Representative Assembly for its vital contributions. And I’d like to thank you, all our members, who provided meaningful input which allowed us to develop this holistic strategic plan.

I encourage you to read the new 2024-2029 strategic plan in full. If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to .

While I am very proud of what we have created together, the next phase will involve a detailed implementation of our strategic plan. There is much work to be done, and I look forward to doing it with all of you.

With gratitude,

Dr Ahmer Karimuddin
