Your Voice Counts - taking our Association into the future together

September 1, 2015

Doctors of BC members around the province are being asked to take part in a consultation to determine the future governance of the Association.

“To help us meet the many challenges our profession will face in the years ahead, we as an organization need an effective process that will enable us to anticipate those challenges and ensure we are nimble, responsive, and effective in dealing with them,” says Dr Charles Webb, President of Doctors of BC.  “We are seeking member input on proposed changes to the way our Association governs itself.”

A consultation paper Every Voice Counts: Shaping the Future of our Association Together, has been sent to all members which outlines two possible options as alternatives to our current single large Board, along with accompanying consultation questions. The two options are:

  • A single, smaller Board, or
  • A dual structure comprised of a smaller Board and a Representative body

Within each of these options are various models that divide the roles and responsibilities of its members, and propose changes to Board composition and election structure. Together with Every Voice Counts is a summary paper that outlines the key points and contains questions for your feedback.

Governance structures and processes define how your voice as a member is heard – it really is to your advantage to get engaged and ensure your views are reflected.

The consultation period closes midnight September 30, 2015. Through the fall we will summarize the feedback to create a new document that you will again have the opportunity to provide feedback on. The final step will be a referendum in spring 2016.

“You are encouraged to read either the full consultation paper or the shorter summary, and answer the accompanying consultation questions,” says Dr Bill Cavers, Chair of the Governance Committee that produced the report. “This is your Association – you should be involved in shaping its future. So get engaged, make your views know, because what you have to say matters.”
