Updated policy statement on Scope of Practice for Health Professionals

January 10, 2024

Informed by member feedback, Doctors of BC has refreshed our existing policy statement on Scope of Practice for Health Professionals and developed updated recommendations that will advise our advocacy with government moving forward.

The goal of this refresh was to ensure that our policy position reflects your needs and concerns, while also ensuring that we are effectively advocating on your behalf. In the context of proposed scope of practice changes to health professions, our statement emphasizes the need for:

  • holistic consultation processes

  • appropriate training

  • ensuring cost-effectiveness of proposed changes

  • supporting team-based, collaborative care; and,

  • avoiding increasing administrative burdens, among others.

While scope of practice changes are a necessary part of the move toward team-based care, we recognize they may have broader implications for patients, doctors, other health care professionals, and the broader health care system. Making these changes requires careful consideration to ensure that health system efficiency and patient safety are maintained.
