Addressing racism in our health care system

November 30, 2020

Doctors of BC thanks Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond and her team for the development of the extensive report, "Addressing Racism: An independent investigation into Indigenous-specific discrimination in B.C. health care," and to the Indigenous individuals and organizations who shared their experiences.

The incidences of anti-Indigenous racism at both the individual and system level in our health care system as described in the report are disturbing and unacceptable, and means Indigenous people are not receiving the care they need.

Significant change is needed on many fronts, including encouraging  a “speak up” culture where complaints and concerns can be safely raised and effectively addressed. Ultimately, quality patient care means culturally safe care delivered free of discrimination for every British Columbian.

We look forward to reviewing the recommendations and working with the ministry on implementation. As a physician association we expect to see every patient treated equally with the respect and dignity they deserve.
