Is that test, treatment, or procedure necessary?

June 2, 2015

When it comes to preserving health, both physicians and patients have an important role to play in evaluating the necessity of certain tests, treatments and procedures. More care isn’t always better care.

Recognizing the need to encourage conversations between patients and their physicians about using the most appropriate tests and procedures, a grass-roots, physician-led campaigned called Choosing Wisely Canada was launched in April of 2014. A series of physician recommendations across a spectrum of specialties were established that details commonly used medical procedures which are not supported by evidence and/or could expose patients to unnecessary harm.

Today, Choosing Wisely Canada has announced 49 new recommendations by 10 specialties. Avoiding CT scans after minor head injury and avoiding psychostimulants for preschool children with ADHD top the list of new recommendations.

Patients can review recommendations by category on the Choosing Wisely Canada website. Topics include bone-density, dementia, headaches, urinary tract infections and more. If you are concerned that you are receiving unnecessary medical procedures, have a conversation with your physician.

Sometimes less is more.
