Wildfires can significantly affect communities across British Columbia, disrupting daily life and placing additional pressure on patients and health care providers. To help physicians navigate the challenges posed by wildfires and other natural disasters, we have compiled information and resources for those providing care in affected regions and for those who are displaced.

Support when you need it

  • The Contingency Planning webpage provides emergency preparedness resources to support physicians before, during, and after an emergency, helping them safeguard their families, maintain their practices, and continue providing patient care whenever possible. It also features a toolkit to help physicians prepare their practices for potential disruptions during wildfire season. It outlines the basic elements of emergency preparedness, business continuity, and personal contingency planning.

  • Physicians with commercial/office or home insurance through our partner, Westland Insurance, may be eligible for the provincial mass evacuation benefit. For details, contact Westland Insurance at +1 800 899-3093 or refer to the accompanying handout

  • The Physician Health Program provides confidential, around-the-clock support for physicians and their families who may be experiencing stress or emotional distress. Counsellors and peer support professionals are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Stay in the know

Wildfire activity can change rapidly, so it is important to stay up to date on evolving conditions. The BC Wildfire Service website provides current information on active wildfires, evacuation orders and alerts, road closures, and other important public safety updates.

For timely, on-the-go updates, the BC Wildfire Service app delivers instant notifications and the latest wildfire information, helping you monitor conditions and respond quickly, wherever you are in the province.
