Doctors of BC is dedicated to promoting the health and well-being of our members, with physician wellness as a core pillar of our strategic plan. Our Physician Health Program (PHP) provides free, confidential support to physicians, medical students, residents, and their families. Supported by a skilled clinical team of physician health experts, PHP can help you with issues such as mental health, relationship stress, career transitions, and substance use.
The stories below highlight real-life experiences from physicians who work with PHP to support their colleagues, as well as those who have sought support from the program. Watch their videos to learn more about how PHP can help.
Care from a physician who understands you
Dr Maureen Mayhew, a Program Physician with PHP, understands what it is like to be a physician. As a fellow physician, she, along with the wider clinical PHP team, will listen and tailor a support program for those who contact PHP.
“Remember, there are lots of people out there just like you—we've helped a lot of them already—and we're willing to help you in whatever way you need.”—Dr Maureen Mayhew
Finding support with PHP-facilitated physician groups
Drs Fahreen Dossa and Lawrence Yang have found support through PHP’s peer support groups and workshops, which provide opportunities to enhance physician well-being through education, new skill development, and sharing experiences in a safe environment with peers.
“In these peer support groups, you can be validated. It's really healing to know that other people are not doing it perfectly.”—Dr Fahreen Dossa
“I think the PHP peer support groups are a fantastic place. They're facilitated in a really safe and confidential way.”—Dr Lawrence Yang
Receiving the help you need, whenever you need it
Dr Marie-Claude Grégoire began her journey with PHP before even moving to the province, reaching out after realizing she needed help. Though initially concerned about the impact contacting PHP might have, she was reassured and received the confidential help she needed. Speaking to anyone considering making the call or sending the email, Dr Grégoire says: “Do it for you, first. But also do it for all the people you love…You're doing it because you want things to be better. And that's not selfish at all.”
“Forget about the whole physician thing, Yes, that's who we are, but we are also human.”—Dr Marie-Claude Grégoire
