For Doctors of BC, physician wellness is a key strategic priority. Supporting doctors’ well-being through programs informed by their specific needs is an important aspect of improving the health care system. These initiatives also provide connection, community, and guidance for physicians as individuals.

As part of this organizational commitment, the Physician Wellness Network (PWN), established in 2022 by the Physician Health Program (PHP), continues to foster community, alignment, and dialogue between organizations across the province that promote physician wellness services.

Focusing on Indigenous physician wellness

The PWN’s in-person Fall Gathering took place this October, with a special focus on supporting the wellness of Indigenous physicians working in Canada’s health care system. Indigenous physicians Drs Michael Dumont, Chase McMurren, and Ryan Giroux co-facilitated the interactive workshop, sharing their personal stories and discussing the National Consortium for Indigenous Medical Education (established in 2021), and its Calls to Action for Indigenous Physician Wellness and Joy in Work. These aim to uplift Indigenous physicians through tangible changes, including:

  • Developing equitable pay models.
  • Promoting specific wellness resources and programs designed for Indigenous physicians.
  • Recognizing the importance of traditional medicine.
  • Combat unique pressures faced by Indigenous physicians, including intergenerational trauma.

“Being present in that room reminded me that reconciliation in health care begins with listening deeply, standing with integrity, and creating spaces where Indigenous physicians can thrive in their whole identity—spirit, culture, and practice.” - Dr Anthon Meyer

Key takeaways

The gathering examined the unique factors that impact the well-being of Indigenous physicians, and participants discussed strategies to enhance their supportive allyship efforts and take more proactive action. Attendees included representatives (both physicians and non-physicians) from more than 40 organizations, including Divisions of Family Practice, health authorities, Rural Coordination Centre of British Columbia (RCCbc), BC Cancer, and the Canadian Medical Association Journal.

“Hearing the lived experiences of Indigenous physicians and the barriers they’ve faced was really life changing. I still am on a journey to truth and reconciliation, and our organization and health care system have a lot of work to do.” – Workshop attendee
