Every physician deserves to work in an environment that is safe, respectful, and supportive. The newly refreshed Provincial Violence Prevention Curriculum (PVPC) for Physicians eLearning course provides physicians with support and information to help prevent violent incidents, enabling them to better protect themselves and others from violence in the workplace.
A relevant course for today’s physicians
The PVPC for Physicians eLearning course is an accredited self-assessment program that incorporates the real-world experiences and expertise of BC’s physicians. It features relevant health care scenarios and incorporates principles of cultural safety and humility, equity, diversity, and inclusion, as well as trauma-informed care. Physicians can access engaging content on the interactive platform, along with policies and additional supports for violence prevention and response efforts.
The updated curriculum was created collaboratively by Doctors of BC, the Ministry of Health, health authorities, and SWITCH BC, and informed by BC-based physicians to ensure it is current and relevant to today's doctors. It includes five eLearning modules based on the PVPC framework, which identifies four main responsibilities in preventing and protecting against violence in the workplace:
- Recognize Risks and Behaviours
- Assess and Plan
- Respond to the Risk
- Report and Communicate Post-Incident
The PVPC for Physicians eLearning course is now available on LearningHub. Medical staff affiliated with Interior Health can access the course on Brightspace and should connect with the IH Physician Engagement team directly for access. Please email mylearning@interiorhealth.ca.
All BC physicians, whether they work in the community or in a health authority facility, are encouraged to take the course and can earn up to 1.5 Mainpro+® credits upon completion.
Facilitator-led classroom training for physicians is also being updated and is expected to be completed in 2026. Learn more in the FAQ on the SWITCH BC website.
