We are pleased to welcome Dr Kelsey Louie to the role of Chief Medical Advisor, Indigenous Health Care at Doctors of BC. Dr Louie brings a deep understanding of culturally safe care in physician services and the ongoing impacts of colonialism on Indigenous health outcomes. This expertise will be vital in supporting Doctors of BC’s Truth and Reconciliation Plan to eliminate Indigenous-specific racism in our health care system.
Dr Louie has served on Doctors of BC’s Board of Directors since 2024 and has been deeply involved in our Truth and Reconciliation work, including playing a key role in establishing the Indigenous Guiding Circle and facilitating several learning sessions with both our Board and staff. As he steps into this new role, he steps down from his position on Doctors of BC’s Board and from his role as Deputy Chief Medical Officer at the First Nations Health Authority, a position he has held since 2017.
Dr Louise is a Tla'amin member and is currently transitioning his primary care and health leadership work back home to t̓išosəm, the lands where he was raised in the qathet region (Powell River). In his practice, he is actively involved with various initiatives to advance equity, inclusivity, and cultural safety in health care, including the First Nations Virtual Doctor of the Day program. He employs a Two-Eyed Seeing approach in providing care, allowing him to bridge diverse knowledge systems and collaborate on solutions that promote the health and wellness of Indigenous communities across the province.
Dr Louie will be joined by our other two Chief Medical Advisors in Primary Care and Specialist Care this spring, and more information will follow once these appointments are finalized.
