Better. Together.

At Doctors of BC, our physician members are at the heart of everything we do. We are committed to working diligently on your behalf, and are proud to offer members a range of valuable benefits and services. There is great value in being a member of Doctors of BC, which is why more than 95% of all BC doctors choose to join.

Some of the ways we support our members in their professional and personal lives

Advocacy:  robust engagement with government and other stakeholders on issues central to family physicians and specialist physicians. This year we implemented the Longitudinal Family Physician payment model as an alternative to FFS that has attracted more than 3,800 family doctors, and we have begun ongoing discussions with government around specialist wait list data and compensation.

In 2023, we also worked with government to reduce the re-referral burden on doctors and patients – patients are now able to continue seeing their consultant or specialist for an ongoing problem without returning to their family doctor every six months. We successfully ratified the WSBC salaried agreement and jointly developed with ICBC a Specialized Physician Services Report that better compensates physicians when providing this service. We continue to support members in enhancing health and safety in the workplace in both facility and community settings, and representing member interests through engagement surveys and influencing meeting with health authority senior leaders to influence topics important to BC physicians.

In 2023, we made recommendations to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC’s proposed bylaw changes that will now include Physician Assistants into BC’s health care system; as the Ministry of Health moves forward with its digital health strategy, we continue to advocate for physician influence in shaping digital health planning and solutions; and continuing our advocacy on other important issues for our membership, including advocating for Gender Equity in the Medical Profession and Addressing Challenges to Surgical Care.

Health and wellness: The Physician Health Program is a responsive, high-quality care provider and community services navigator for physicians, medical learners, and their families. PHP offers a 24/7 confidential helpline at 1-800-663-6729, other free clinical services, peer support groups for physicians, and so much more. If you are having issues with mental health, relationships, substance use, or are going through a life transition, PHP is there to support you.

Insurance: BC physicians can choose from a number of comprehensive personal and professional insurance options, including life, disability, accident and illness; travel and medical; identity theft; health and dental; and property and casualty insurance. Get advice from our salaried insurance advisors who work exclusively with members.

Office resources: business supports through Business Pathways (new in 2022), and billing and auditing supports such as mini practice profiles, and billing and audit advice.

Financial: we continue to offer a number of negotiated financial benefits including the Contributory Professional Retirement Savings Plan (CPRSP) to help physicians fund their retirement, the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) rebate program to reimburse physicians their CMPA fees, and the Continuing Medical Education (CME) to assist physicians with their educational expenses.

Personal: the Parental Leave Program pays up to 17 weeks when you have a child, either by birth, adoption, or surrogacy; Club MD, in collaboration with Venngo MemberPerks, provides a premium discount program to a vast array of deals offering choice, convenience, and savings for you and your family.

2024 Member Renewal: What you need to know

Doctors of BC members will receive renewal notices and reminders via email.

To recognize the impact of inflation and increased Doctors of BC initiatives (expanded member benefits, resuming in person meetings, etc.) the board approved an increase in annual member dues of 8% at its October meeting.  Since 2012, member dues have only increased twice – by 2% in 2012 and by another 2% in 2019. With this increase, Doctors of BC dues remain the lowest in the country.

Doctors of BC will now be applying a 1.8% surcharge for any dues that are paid by credit card. We always incur fees when processing credit cards, and last year the association incurred $443,000 in credit card fees from dues members paid by credit card. The 1.8% surcharge, or approximately $29, will offset this significant expense allowing Doctors of BC to allocate the savings to higher-value services for members, while still offering the convenience of credit card payment to those who prefer it.

During the 2024 membership renewal process, Doctors of BC will automatically carry forward your profile from 2023, which includes Section and Society memberships. For physicians who wish to retain the benefits associated with CMA membership, CMA will now collect dues directly from you
