Coming together, representing physicians in BC, Doctors of BC, BC Family Doctors, Consultant Specialists of BC, and the BC College of Family Physicians have developed a standardized letter to help employers understand recent changes to provincial sick note requirements.

On National Physicians’ Day, this initiative underscores a shared commitment to supporting physicians and ensuring that clinical time is focused where it is most needed—on patient care. It also helps educate employers and employees about the new legislative changes regarding sick notes.

The letter reflects updated regulations under the Employment Standards Act, which limit when employers can request sick notes for short-term illnesses. These changes follow longstanding advocacy from physician organizations to reduce unnecessary medical visits that do not contribute to patient care.

Routine sick note requests for minor illnesses lead to unnecessary appointments, increase the risk of spreading infections, and divert time and resources away from patients with more urgent needs. The new guidelines support a more appropriate use of health care services while reducing administrative burdens for physicians.

While ending unnecessary sick notes for short-term illnesses will allow British Columbians to recover at home, patients should always consult their physician if they feel their symptoms warrant medical attention.

Employers are encouraged to review the updated requirements and for employees to use the letter as an educational resource to align workplace practices with the new legislation.
