Doctors of BC has reviewed with interest the results of an independent review on the temporary closure of Kelowna General Hospital’s pediatric unit last year that highlighted long-term dysfunction and trust issues at the site. Doctors of BC notes positive steps taken by Interior Health to address these issues and rebuild trust with physicians.
We are pleased that mediation, involving Doctors of BC, has led to tangible actions and improved relations. The review did highlight the potential for Interior Health leadership to have proactively addressed the crisis when physicians shared their concerns, and while action was delayed, it eventually took place.
Doctors of BC remains committed to supporting KGH physicians and Interior Health along this journey. We are also acutely aware of the challenges pediatricians face across the province, underscoring the need for ongoing planning at the regional and provincial levels to support this important service. Together with the government, we can build a resilient, responsive health care system that adequately supports physicians while also delivering high-quality pediatric care to British Columbians.
