Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to enhance BC’s health care system for both doctors and patients. AI tools are already showing significant promise in supporting workflow efficiency, reducing administrative and cognitive burdens, and enhancing the patient care experience. While the potential for innovation is evident, integrating AI tools in health care should be done with appropriate safeguards in place.

Navigating AI in health care: Recommendations and commitments

In a new policy statement, Artificial Intelligence in Health Care, Doctors of BC calls for a responsible and effective approach to integrating AI in the health care system. This includes establishing robust safeguards and thoroughly considering ethical concerns in response to the rapid evolution of AI use in health care.

As part of our recommendations, the statement stresses the importance of physician leadership in collaborative governance and oversight initiatives, highlights the need to include the physician voice in any AI integration activities, and provides a fulsome analysis of key issues impacting the health care system, such as risk mitigation, data protection, change management, and other considerations.

We also outline our organization’s commitments related to AI use in medical settings, including advancing collaborative, multi-partner AI governance, engaging with health system partners and AI vendors to promote alignment, and advocating for sustainable funding and educational tools to support physicians interested in the adoption of AI tools.
