The Regional Physician Health and Safety Working Groups (RPHSWG) have been formally established by the Memorandum of Agreement on Physical and Psychological Health and Safety (2025 PHS Agreement) was negotiated as part of the 2025 Physician Main Agreement. The 2025 PHS Agreement outlines expanded support for the physical and psychological health and safety for physicians. This includes a working group in each health authority to engage on matters of importance regarding regional physician health and safety.
It was recognized that structures and processes for physicians regarding physical and psychological safety vary considerably across the province. In some cases, these processes do not exist at all. The 2025 PHS Agreement seeks to continue rebuild many of these processes so that physicians are better supported and protected in their work environment.
The responsibilities of the Working Group are to:
- Identify, review and discuss issues related to health and safety within the region or individual sites;
- Approve projects and initiatives in alignment with its Terms of Reference;
- Review health and safety policies and procedures and make recommendations to Provincial Level Working Groups and the Health Authority;
- Share statistical data and de-identified aggregate data between the Health Authorities and the Doctors of BC; and
- Consult and engage with the Health Authority to support the delivery of key information to the department and individual level. Key information may include effective reporting of critical tracking information, policy or process changes and progress on the implementation of elements of the Canadian Standards Association standard regionally and for specific sites.
