Steps for families of physicians and colleagues when a physician unexpectedly dies
If a family member or colleague unexpectedly dies, you may have to execute a plan to ensure the proper steps are taken to close or transfer their practice.

Immediate steps to take
- Inform the clinic or practice so they can notify patients.
- Inform the BC College of Physicians and Surgeons.
- Determine if there is a will and/or estate plan, and share with legal support.
Other important tasks
- Ensure the proper transfer and/or storage of medical records.
- Inform the landlord/leasing manager, if applicable. If the building was owned, refer to the estate plan and seek legal and/or real estate support.
If the practice is closing
- Ensure confidential paperwork is properly destroyed or recycled. For support, visit Recycling Council of BC.
- Consider selling or donating equipment.
- Contact rental companies to return rented equipment (e.g., photocopiers, computers, security monitoring systems).
