The Joint Collaborative Committees (JCCs) in partnership with Len Pierre Consulting and the Ktunaxa First Nation, are looking forward to hosting a Community-Based Experiential Learning Session.
During these sessions, physicians will experience:
- Cultural safety teachings through an immersive, “circle and the box” learning.
- Teachings and protocols from local/regional Indigenous communities.
- A shared meal, language, history, and stories.
- A deeper understanding of residential school trauma.
- Connections with local health staff and providers.
- The opportunity for on-going learning and relationship-building between participants and Indigenous communities.
Sessional time and mileage exceeding 50km one-way will be covered by the JCCs.
We are grateful to hold this session on the unceded, ancestral, and traditional territory of the Ktunaxa, who have lived on and stewarded these lands since time out of mind. Once a former residential school, the Mission Building was reclaimed under the visionary leadership of the Ktunaxa Nation and transformed into a full-service resort and beacon of light for the community. St. Eugene Resort’s ownership consists of four Ktunaxa communities including the ʔAkisq̓nuk, ʔAq̓am, Yaq̓it ʔa·knuqⱡi ‘it (Tobacco Plains), Yaqan nukiy (Lower Kootenay) and the Kenpesq’t (Shuswap Indian Band). Together we make up St. Eugene Mission Holdings Limited (SEM).
In these sessions, themes of colonial genocide, systematic separation from Indigenous identity, land and culture and the resulting mental and physical health disparities, will be discussed. These themes may surface personal stories and participants are encouraged to prepare to hear this difficult journey.
