An essential billing audit tool

Your Mini Practice Profile (MPP) is an annual billing tool available through the Doctors of BC website. It provides valuable insights into billing patterns for physicians billing under the Medical Services Commission (MSC) payment schedules—whether through fee-for-service (FFS) or the Longitudinal Family Physician (LFP) payment model.

MPPs are generated for physicians who have billed at least $1,000 in a calendar year, based on claims data submitted to the Medical Services Plan (MSP), including any settlements or retroactive payments up to March 31 of the following year. MPPs are not generated for salaried physicians on an alternative payment contract, unless you meet the minimum noted above.

The purpose of your MPP

Your MPP serves as educational billing tool and is designed to:

  • Compare your practice: See how your billing patterns align with your designated comparison group.
  • Identify outliers: Flags on your Mini Practice Profile indicate where you are outside the typical patterns of your comparison group. More than two (2) standard deviations above the group average may warrant further review.
  • Reduce audit risk: Reflecting on flagged areas may help mitigate the risk of a future MSP audit.

Why you should review your MPP annually

Regularly reviewing your MPP helps you:

  • Stay informed: Understand how your billing patterns compare to your comparison group.
  • Ensure compliance: Meet all MSC Payment Schedules requirements of all fee items billed [fee for service (FFS) and Longitudinal Family Physician (LFP) payment model].
  • Maintain accurate records: Make and maintain adequate medical records as specified in the MSC Payment Schedules and Preambles (FFS and LFP).
