Appointments to Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Working Group

December 19, 2018

The Board of Doctors of BC has approved the appointments of seven physicians and one medical student to positions on the newly created Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Working Group.

The group will advise our diversity consultant and Association staff as it develops a plan to engage with members to gain a solid understanding of the barriers to achieving diversity and inclusion in our committees, Board, and Representative Assembly (RA). This is the first step in achieving more diversity in our governance structures.
As recommended by the Nominating Committee, the group members are:

  • Dr Simona Spassova, Family Physician in Bella Bella
  • Dr Evan Adams, Chief Medical Officer/First Nations Health Authority
  • Dr Charuka Maheswaran, Family Physician in Courtenay
  • Dr Barinder Singh, Psychiatrist in Delta
  • Dr Sukaina Kara, Family Physician in Surrey
  • Mr Ben Chen, Medical Student
  • Dr Samantha Segal, Internist in Trail
  • Dr Graham Reid, Rheumatologist in Vancouver

The Nominating Committee had a fulsome discussion before making its recommendations, given the direction that the working group ought to reflect the full range of our members.

Doctors of BC thanks all of the physicians who expressed an interest in serving on the working group. We will communicate with members on this important initiative in the new year.

More on other Board appointments and decisions can be found in our Board Report to Members.
