Are you a Doctors of BC member in good-standing who wants to get involved in the association at a meaningful level? With more than 60 member-run committees advocating on behalf of physicians and BC citizens alike, we deal with a diverse range of issues, including policy development, physician health and well-being, continuing medical education (CME), financial management of the Association, and the promotion of health in general.

Diversity and Inclusion are important values for Doctors of BC, and we strive to ensure our governance bodies and committees reflect the rich diversity of our membership in a safe and collegial environment. We therefore encourage all members who have the necessary requirements for any of the following committees to apply. 1. Alternative Payment Physician Issues Committee

Doctors of BC is seeking one (1) Service Contracted Emergency Physician and one (1) Sessionally Contracted Family Physician with a Focused Practice to be appointed to the Alternative Payment Physicians Issues Committee (APPIC). Doctors of BC recognises that not every member of the committee will have each skill listed below, but all of the skills will be represented by the committee as a collective group.

The APPIC is a standing committee of the Doctors of BC that engages with Alternate Payment (AP) physicians and advises on issues affecting physicians who receive a portion of their remuneration through salaries, service contracts and/or sessions. 

The APPIC provides input and recommendations on the mandate for negotiations and on the activities of joint BCMA/Government Committees.

2. Clinical Faculty Working Group

Doctors of BC is seeking one (1) Doctors of BC Family Practitioner representative who is actively engaged in clinical teaching for the Faculty of Medicine at UBC to be appointed to the Clinical Faculty Working Group.

The Clinical Faulty Working Group is a joint committee with UBC’s Faculty of Medicine. The Role of the Working Group is to provide a forum for ongoing communication between UBC Faculty of Medicine and Clinical Faculty, as represented by Doctors of BC and the Section of Clinical Faculty, with respect to issues affecting Clinical Faculty. Work in 2024 will include consulting with UBC Faculty of Medicine to support the update of a Clinical Faculty survey that is scheduled to take place in late 2024 as well as to engage with them on the implementation of Clinical Faculty support initiatives. Work in 2025 will primarily be directed to consulting with the UBC Faculty of Medicine on the Terms of Compensation and other matters of importance to Clinical Faculty based on the results the survey.

3. The Council on Health Economics and Policy 

Doctors of BC is seeking applications from the membership to fill one (1) member position on the Council on Health Economics and Policy (CHEP). Doctors of BC recognises that not every member of the committee will have each skill listed below, but all the skills will be represented by the committee as a collective group. 

Under the guidance and approval of the Doctors of BC Board of Directors (Board), CHEP:

  • Directs the activities of Doctors of BC concerned with the assessment and formulation of policy options relating to the economics, organization, and management of the health care system.
  • Seeks consensus within the medical profession on key policy and economic issues.
  • Assists Doctors of BC in creating a more effective dialogue with all levels of government so as to ensure that the voice of the profession is heard at the federal, provincial, and inter-provincial levels.
  • Encourages the development of “strategic alliances” with other provincial and national bodies as appropriate or required in areas of provincial or national concern and interest.

4. Regional Physician Health and Safety Working Group

Doctors of BC is seeking one (1) Vancouver Coastal Health Authority physician member for the Regional Physician Health and Safety Working Group.

A Memorandum of Agreement on Physical/Psychological Safety (2022 PHS Agreement) was negotiated as part of the 2022 Physician Master Agreement. The 2022 PHS Agreement outlines expanded support for the physical and psychological health and safety for physicians. This includes a working group in each health authority to engage on matters of importance regarding regional physician health and safety.

It was recognized that structures and processes for physicians regarding physical and psychological safety vary considerably across the province. In some cases, these processes do not exist at all. The 2022 PHS Agreement seeks to establish or rebuild many of these processes so that physicians are better supported and protected in their work environment.

The work of this position involves two parts: 

  1. Serving as the Doctors of BC Regional representative at the Interior/Fraser Health Physician Health and Safety Working Group. 
  2. Potential representation at a Provincial Level Working Group to discuss broader physician specific issues related to health and safety. This Working Group is called the Provincial Physician Health and Safety Working Group. Three Doctors of BC representatives are nominated within the Group of Regional representatives to attend this Working Group along with membership from the Health Authorities and Ministry of Health.

5. Specialist Services Committee

The Doctors of BC is seeking one (1) Medical Specialist (which includes Anesthesiology) to be a Doctors of BC voting representative to the Specialist Services Committee (SSC). 

While the SSC desires to have physicians with various practice perspectives, the successful applicant is expected to represent all Specialist Physicians at SSC on behalf of the Doctors of BC, irrespective of specialty, mode of compensation, practice location or organization. 

There are four voting member seats and three alternate member seats on the SSC. Members including voting and alternate members are encouraged to attend the majority of SSC meetings and participate fully in discussion and consensus decision-making. In the event a committee decision requires a formal vote, an alternate member may be delegated the responsibility to act as a voting member if a voting member is not present. However, in practice the committee makes decisions by consensus and does not formally vote on issues.

6. Tariff Committee

The Tariff Committee is currently comprised of a Chair and seven sitting members. Doctors of BC is currently seeking applications for a Successor Chair to transition into the Chair position. This new Successor Chair position is a three-year term and will transition into the Chair position as follows: 

  • Successor Chair will be mentored by the current Chair and provided training and instruction for one year during which time the current Chair will complete their final year. 
  • In year two, the Successor Chair will move into the Chair position for the remainder of their term (2 years) and the former Chair will step off the Tariff Committee completely.
  • After completing three years, the new Chair, may be eligible for a second three-year term if term limits have not yet been exceeded.

The Tariff Committee is authorized to study all matters concerning medical economics and report the same to Board of Directors. This includes:

  • Reviewing and recommending MSC Payment Schedule changes submitted by Sections,
  • Providing information, clarification and direction to Sections and members on MSP billing matters and policy, and
  • Maintaining protocols and policies related to the process to make MSC Payment Schedule changes.

7. WorkSafeBC Liaison Committee

Doctors of BC is seeking applications for one (1) Specialist Physician members to sit on the WorkSafeBC Liaison Committee. This physician can be filled by any specialty.

The WorkSafeBC Liaison Committee is a Joint Committee. WorkSafeBC and the Doctors of BC participate in the Liaison Committee to address areas of mutual interest and/or concern regarding care of injured workers. As per the Doctors of BC – WorkSafeBC FFS/Salary agreement that was ratified in 2019, the Liaison Committee’s specific objectives include:

  • Physician education (e.g. WorkSafeBC billings, policies, and programs).
  • Consultation and input to WorkSafeBC policies relevant to clinical practice, including forms development and reporting requirements; and,
  • Dispute resolution between physicians and WorkSafeBC regarding the practice or billing process.
