Doctors work with partners to recruit physicians to BC

November 14, 2016

BC’s doctors are taking a leadership role and working in partnership with government, Health Authorities and others to help bring new family physicians to our province.

With the launch of the new website PracticeinBC.ca, it is easier than ever for doctors, residents and students within the province and around the world to access everything they need to know about becoming a family doctor in BC – in one place.

The Divisions of Family Practice – through their Recruitment and Retention Steering Committee - saw the need for a one-stop information site designed specifically for GPs who are interested in building their careers and lives in BC. The site provides the spectrum of information for every stage of their careers, including areas such as:

  • applying to medical schools and residency programs,
  • immigration processes,
  • lifestyle options across BC, and
  • how to find a job practicing family medicine.

PracticeinBC.ca also provides a host of recruitment and retention tools to help local divisions connect with the right family doctors for locum and permanent opportunities in their communities.

Funded by the General Practice Services Committee (GPSC), the Divisions of Family Practice Recruitment and Retention Steering Committee was formed in 2012 to support local divisions in filling opportunities for family doctors. The collaborative committee and its partners bring together representatives from the GPSC, Doctors of BC, the provincial government, Health Authorities, Health Match BC, the Society of General Practitioners, the BC College of Family Physicians, the Joint Standing Committee on Rural Issues, the University of British Columbia, the Society of General Practitioners and regional divisions of family practice.
