Doctors of BC “Education Days” – engaging with members in their communities

April 24, 2017

Did you know Doctors of BC can provide advice to reduce your risk of an MSP audit? Or that the association can support members in their communities with local advocacy and negotiations? Have you wondered how and why Doctors of BC develops the policy positions it does? You can find answers and learn more about the work Doctors of BC does behind the scenes that benefit individual physicians and the profession at our “Education Days.” These events bring Doctors of BC staff out to you, our members, to inform you about the inherent value and core supports your Association provides you. And I can’t stress enough the importance of events such as these.

I recently attended the second Education Day, this one held in Victoria. These events provide a fantastic opportunity to learn first-hand about the work your Association does on your behalf each and every day. Staff members from nearly every Doctors of BC department give informative and engaging overviews about the work they do that benefits doctors, including important work you might not even be aware of. Even with my level of involvement with Doctors of BC now and over the years, I still learn something new at these Education Day events. With an Association as large as ours, it can be perplexing to navigate through the organization yourself – to know where to go or who to contact when you need assistance. These Education Day events filter the information for you, and present it in an easy, simple and engaging format. The conversations are two-way – staff members are here to answer your questions and listen to your suggestions.

I was delighted to see such a large number of members take time out of their weekend to attend the Victoria Education Day. We had a great blend of family and specialist physicians, all fully engaged, asking questions, interacting with one another and very interested in learning about the role Doctors of BC plays in their professional lives. These Education Day events let us bring together our collective knowledge, and share ideas with our Association and with each other – and trust me, you all have a lot of knowledge to share. I would encourage all members, especially our younger ones, to really embrace events such as this – to learn from your Association and your peers about how to make the most out of your membership.

The next Education Day is being held Saturday, May 13th in Vancouver. I encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to hear about the work being done on your behalf. More information can be found here.
