Event offers medical students the opportunity to "speed-date" career options

February 6, 2015

The choice of which medical discipline to pursue can be daunting for any medical student nearing the end of their schooling. By their third year of medical school students are required to choose one of a 120 specialties to continue their career in medicine, some of which include family medicine, psychiatry, radiology, general surgery, and cardiology.

Doctors of BC understands how medical students may experience feelings of stress and anxiety before making such an important career decision. This is why we began Find Your Match: Career speed-dating night for med students, where students have the chance to meet with physicians in a variety of specialties and ask them questions about work and lifestyle choices, to gain a deeper understanding of what opportunities are available in each discipline. The event is organized similar to a “speed-dating” event, where doctors rotate from table to table to talk about their career and explain the challenges and rewards of their chosen specialty.

Last year the first Find Your Match event was organized in Vancouver, where 120 students networked with 11 practising physicians. Both doctors and students agreed that while the evening was busy, it was also of great value and they were glad they attended. Third-year medical student, Claire Campion-Wright said she gained new perspective of her future path, when many physicians commented on how they have adapted their practice as their career evolved. “I left the evening with a sense that each specialty can be fulfilling in its own way and that we can make what we want of our careers,” said Ms Campion-Wright.

This year’s Find Your Match events are happening in Victoria and Prince George. Medical students can attend the event by reserving their spot on the event pages.
