The light amidst the darkness

February 3, 2022

As we enter our third year of the pandemic, I reflect on all that has transpired and acknowledge the collective moral distress and emotional exhaustion. In spite of it all though, I am still hopeful for the future. As Desmond Tutu so profoundly said, “Hope is being able to seHand%20reaching%20to%20the%20light%20e that there is light despite all of the darkness.”

I see the light amidst the darkness. Within the vast landscape of uncertainty, you have shown up and led like never before. I recognize it has been difficult to count our blessings and find joy while we’re entrenched in our ongoing stress, struggle, and even grief – while our world is fraught with knee deep complexities. And I recognize the combination and compartmentalization of contrasting emotions has been challenging to say the least. That is why what we need now is hope – is trust.

Your individual and collective commitment has eased the burden of vicarious grief. All of us can foster joy by intentionally leaning into our purpose, our values, and our passion. Hope is demonstrated when we continue to do the right thing in our leadership, despite what darkness may surround us.

I look to you to trust one other and to trust in the power of us. I believe amidst the most challenging circumstances we can rise to the task, as you continue to exemplify. We can do difficult things and have the crucial conversations that need to be had. Since stepping into my presidency I can say I am met with outstanding allyship. I am optimistic and I see a brighter future for us all.

It is time for us to elevate our existence, our participation, and our influence like never before. Today, as we recognize the balancing act of joy and grief simultaneously, let us lead with hope and trust together. Let us all see the light amidst the darkness.
