Dr Adam Thompson, Doctors of BC President

Building community through positive connection.

Dr Adam Thompson

Growing up with a grandfather who was a nurse and a brother pursuing medicine, Dr Adam Thompson was introduced to the world of health care from an early age. Seeing the compassion and intellectual fulfillment his family found in caring for others inspired a desire to follow a similar path—one rooted in caring, connection, and community.

“I began my training in family medicine, and although a psychiatry rotation led me to briefly reconsider, it ultimately reaffirmed what I love most about family medicine– the wide scope of care, the deep connections with families, and the privilege of sharing in a patient’s entire life journey. Being a family doctor is my true calling.”

As President, Dr Thompson will focus on encouraging all physicians to intentionally foster positive connections with one another, with patients, with health care partners, and with their local communities. From this, Dr Thompson will focus his presidency on the theme “Building community through positive connection,” acknowledging that connection is the cornerstone of community and essential to creating a resilient health care system where family physicians and specialists unite through shared purpose. Recognizing the growing challenges in health care, Dr Thompson believes that fostering resilience among physicians—grounded in a strong sense of community—is key to their well-being and to empowering them to create positive change within the health care system.

Dr Thompson will also look to amplify the physician voice and increase physician influence when key decisions are being made. “Physicians play a central role in health care, and meaningful, lasting system transformation is only possible when we have a strong and effective voice.” To support this, he looks forward to advocating for a collaborative health care system that addresses the challenges faced by both specialists and family physicians in developing long-term solutions.

Dr Thompson first became involved with Doctors of BC through his role on the Board of Directors, including serving as Chair and Vice-Chair. He has also been a member of Doctors of BC’s Governance Committee, Audit and Finance Committee, Nominations Committee, and Physician Business Service Oversight Committee. Additionally, Dr Thompson has held several other medical leadership roles, including Co-Chair of the Comox Valley Division of Family Practice, Co-Chair of the Comox Valley Primary Care Network, Co-Lead of the Longitudinal Family Physician Payment Model Working Group, among many others.

Outside of work, Dr Thompson enjoys mountain biking and skiing—both alpine and backcountry. He also values time with his wife Emma, and two sons who are at the University of BC in Kelowna.
